Maybe you have discovered, that configuring a non ssl exchange account is not so easy on iOS because the OS checks the settings and gives you the message that the account information could not be checked. Finish. Often the reason for that are typos in username or server or password, but sometimes your exchange server does not support ssl encryption turned on (what is default with the iOS exchange settings). Therefore you have to save the account settings after 1st unsuccessful check and then got to the account settings, further settings and switch off the ssl toggle button. Voila, that should do the trick.
